Fujifilm announces YMC winner

Karan Kandhari has been named the winner of the recent Fujifilm/You Must Create (YMC) competition, part of Fujifilm's popular Complete 16 film and processing package.

Filmmakers were invited to submit a treatment for an original and inspiring short film to promote YMC's spring/summer collection. The prize includes five rolls of 16mm film stock, free processing and HD transfer plus camera rental from Panavision and a lighting rental package courtesy of Panalux. Karan also collects 1,000 of YMC clothes.

Karan's winning submission, Flight of the Pompadour, a coming-of-age story set against a rock and roll backdrop, appealed to the judges who described it as 'a perfect fit with YMC's ethos'. Fraser Moss from YMC explains: "We received a fantastic reaction with many strong entries and ideas. It was hard job to whittle them down to the final winning entry, but we feel Karan's submission is a perfect fit with the YMC ethos and humour. We would like to thank everyone who took the time and entered the competition and many thanks to Fujifilm for all of their support. We're really looking forward to seeing the finished film."

Karan, a director/writer based in London, is understandably delighted with his triumph: "The competition brief sounded awesome from the get-go - I've loved YMC clothes for years and obviously I'm a fan of Fujifilm's stock. It's just much more fun shooting on film as opposed to digital, you get to be a bit more creative from the start choosing your optics and colour palette and emulsion in tandem. I must say I didn't expect to win but I'm so, so pleased I have!"

He continued: "I wanted to create something that appealed to YMC's aesthetics and we seem to share a slightly odd sense of humour. I mean they've got jumpers laid out on an old morgue table in one of their stores. My work is usually about misfits, loners and people who don't fit into boxes and Flight of the Pompadour no different. Now the hard work begins!"
