THE KING’S SPEECH records a hat-trick for Fujifilm UK
The success of THE KING’S SPEECH at the 2011 Academy Awards completes a memorable hat-trick for Fujifilm Motion Picture UK.
This is the third year running that the Fujifilm UK office has supplied a feature produced on Fujifilm Motion Picture film stock which has been awarded BEST FILM in both the Oscars® and the BAFTAs®. The win for THE KING’S SPEECH follows similar triumphs in 2010 for THE HURT LOCKER and for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE in 2009.
THE KING’S SPEECH had led the nominations, competing in 12 categories, and ended up collecting an impressive four Academy Awards®. In addition to the coveted BEST FILM award, the film also picked up BEST DIRECTING for Tom Hooper, WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY) and BEST ACTOR for Colin Firth.
THE KING’S SPEECH shot by DoP Danny Cohen BSC, was originated on 35mm Fujicolor ETERNA, Vivid 500T 8547, ETERNA Vivid 160T 8543 and ETERNA 250D 8563.
Tom Hooper’s inspirational film about King George VI’s battle with his speech impediment wasn’t the only success for Fujifilm with many other productions also scooping major awards. Christian Bale was named BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR in the Oscars® for his role in THE FIGHTER. Natalie Portman won both the Oscar® and the BAFTA for BEST ACTRESS for her performance in BLACK SWAN and UNTIL THE RIVER RUNS RED was named BEST SHORT FILM at the BAFTAs®.
BLACK SWAN shot by DoP Matthew Libatique ASC was originated on 16mm ETERNA Vivid 500T 8647 and ETERNA Vivid 160T 8643. THE FIGHTER was originated on 2-Perf 35mm ETERNA 500T 8573, ETERNA 250D 8563 and ETERNA 250T 8553 and was shot by Hoyte van Hoytema NSC FSF.
In addition to the gongs handed out at the Oscars® and the BAFTAs®, Fujifilm originated features were also well represented at other major awards ceremonies including The Golden Globes, the British Independent Film Awards, the London Critics Circle Awards, the Evening Standard Film Awards, Directors’ Guild of America, Producers’ Guild of America and the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards.
The Independent Spirit Awards saw Matthew Libatique ASC collecting BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY for his 16mm work on BLACK SWAN and AS IF I AM NOT THERE shot by DoP Tim Fleming won BEST FILM at The Irish Film & Television Academy Awards.
