MPA Diamond Jubilee Award winners unveiled
The Master Photographers Association (MPA) has announced the winners in its 2012 Master Photography Diamond Jubilee Awards. The main winners are Vanessa Ho, Clare Louise, David MacDonald, Louise Sumner, Aaron Ang and Chris Bradbury.
Vanessa Ho was named 'International Photographer of the Year' and her work also won the categories of Fine Art & Pictorial, Wedding Art and Fashion and 'Rest of World Portolio of the Year' , as well as picking up the titles of 'Overseas Portrait Photographer' and 'Wedding Photographer.'
On her multiple wins, Vanessa commented: "I am still in shock at receiving my awards on Sunday evening; just to be in a room filled with so many established photographers was an honour. I would say the MPA is a fantastic organisation for photographers to come together and receive help and guidance in order to grow their businesses and I am very grateful."
Clare Louise was judged the winner of the 'UK Portfolio of the Year' for a second time in a row and 'Best UK Commercial Photographer' went to David MacDonald. The 'UK Wedding Photographer' title went to Louise Sumner and the 'Overseas Commercial Photographer' title went to Aaron Ang. Chris Bradbury was named 'UK Portrait Photographer' of the night.
Portfolio winners of the night were based on the highest scoring five images from those submitted.
The announcement was made at the recent Master Photography Awards Dinner in Newcastle. The event attracted the cream of the world's photographers who, together with many major trade representatives, packed into the Gateshead Hilton for a glittering night's celebration of photography.
The judging panel was again headed by Henk van Kooten FMPA, and the judges evaluated each entry and awarded points based on impact, composition, colour management and workmanship.
Vanessa is a self-taught fine art photographer from Singapore with a mix of styles ranging from pictorialism to cinematic. Upon joining the Master Photographers Association in June 2012, she was initially granted her Licentiate (LMPA) qualification. However, due to the high standard of her work, the decision was made to award Vanessa with the Associate title, the next level of qualifications within the Association.
She has a self-published book on her work entitled 'Once upon her Time' which can be purchased at www.blurb.com and her work has been used for book covers, magazines, advertisements and many more. On her particular style of photography, Vanessa commented: "I would describe my work as feminine, romantic and a little bit melancholy. I like to tell stories with the photographs I take."
Ray Lowe, HonFBIPP, FMPA, was bestowed the honour of receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Master Photographers Association. In a surprise turn of events, there was a second Lifetime Achievement Award to be handed out on the night, and that went to Colin Buck, MPA Chief Executive.
Colin Buck, MPA chief executive, paid tribute to the winners and commented on his own surprise award: "Huge congratulations go to all our major winners. The competition was, as always, of an incredibly high calibre, and made the judging process a particularly difficult-task. The creativity displayed by the top level of photographers is truly amazing and I'm sure it must act as a huge inspiration for the rest of the industry. To say I was surprised to receive my Lifetime Achievement award is an understatement, but I couldn't be more proud to be a part of an Association that celebrates such talent in the industry."
